Alejandro (Alex) Samora Arredondo peacefully passed away at the age of 80 on August 30, 2022. He was the first of three sons born in Tempe, AZ to Emilio and Helen (Samora) Arredondo. He is survived by beloved wife Alvina (together for 30 years), brother Robert, Uncle Tom Samora, daughter/son-in-law Alissa and Robert, son Jaime (James), daughter/son-in-law Nadia and Brian, son/daughter-in-law Joe and Michelle, son/daughter-in-law Michael Sr and Stephanie, grandsons Joseph, Nico, Matthew, Noah and Michael Jr, granddaughter Elizabeth, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Alex graduated from Mesa High School in 1960. His early career began with three years of service in the United States Army, 101st Airborne division, The Screaming Eagles. He held many positions throughout his career in the Arizona Maricopa County Department of Health and Human Services, the AZ Governor’s office of Affirmative Action, as President of the AZ Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and as the Health Safari Coordinator at Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Arizona. Alex was active in his community and committed to supporting the underserved. He was an advocate for the Mexican American community, a member of the Commission on Minorities for equitable treatment of minority youth in the Arizona Juvenile Justice System, a supporter of Chicanos por la Causa and the Friendly House, and a volunteer for Alma de la Gente’s Fiestas las Patrias. Alex was a long time season ticket holder for the ASU Sun Devils. He cherished his very large group of family and friends and loved to tailgate with them before the football games. He briefly owned a Mexican restaurant in Mesa, AZ and loved to cook and share his favorite recipes. One of his greatest joys was attending his grandson’s football games and cheering them to victory. His interests included traveling throughout Mexico and California, visiting the beaches in Mexico, going to movies, watching sports, and making menudo for family and friends annually on New Year’s Day.
