Carmen had a long and productive career after graduating from the Hospital of Joint Diseases in New York, where she was studying nursing. Her skills in the nursing field served her in both the public as well as private sectors. After residing in New York, Carmen returned to St. Thomas in 1966, where she began 28 years of employment with the Virgin Islands Department of Health, Community Health Division. While at the VIDOH, she served in many capacities, including Coordinator of Health Outreach where she spear headed the community health screenings before she retired in 1994. In addition to her active work within the VIDOH, she was also the president of the Volunteers for the Visually Handicapped Association, where she introduced the Talking Book as one of her achievements. Carmen was a proud long-term member of Lions International, serving over 21 years, beginning at the St. Thomas East Lioness Club. She served the Lions in many capacities over the years, as President, Leo District Associate Chair, Leo Advisor, Melvin Jones Fellow, as well as many other offices for the organization. She was voted Lion of the year for two consecutive years. Carmen loved to travel, read, listen to music, and go to the beach, but most of all, Carmen loved food.
