David Thomas Halverson, of Scottsdale, Arizona, peacefully passed away on October 26, 2023 surrounded by loved ones, at the age of 87. David was born on July 4,1936 to Ethel Olive Dronen and Hubert Alfred Halverson in the small town of Sharon, North Dakota. David attended Sharon Grade School and High School, where he was the valedictorian of his class and enjoyed playing basketball. David met the love of his life, Irene E. Gehrke, during high school and graduated in 1954. He then attended Concordia College and later married Irene in 1957. In 1959 he received a B.A. in Chemistry and enlisted in the US. Navy to see the world. David and Irene enjoyed 66 wonderful years of marriage and had three children, Karen, Joel and Linda. David retired from the Navy as Lieutenant Commander after 21 years of service, and moved to Arizona in 1980 to live closer to his family. He started a second career and worked for Honeywell Corporation for 16 years as a Quality Control Engineer, retiring in 1995. David is survived by his wife of 66 years, Irene E. Halverson, his son, Joel Halverson and daughter-in-law Mona, of Hawthorne, Florida; his daughter Linda Melara, and son-in-law George Melara, of Scottsdale, Arizona; his sister Jewel Kristiansen and his brother Donald Halverson. David was blessed with 5 grandchildren, whom he loved very much (Sara, Eric, Hanna, Allison, and Emma); 2 great-grandchildren (Juniper and George); 2 step great-grandchildren (Griffin and Odin); and many beloved nieces, nephews and friends. David was preceded in death by his parents, and his first-born daughter Karen Halverson and his first-born granddaughter, Sara Halverson, whom he loved with all his heart. David will always be remembered for his kind, generous and compassionate nature, his laughter and his smile. David’s family would like to thank the All Saints Lutheran Church clergy and members for their prayers, the caring staff at Sunrise of Scottsdale Assisted Living and Aegis Hospice who served him compassionately over the last year of his life. Service Information
Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life Memorial Service at 3:00 pm on Saturday, November 25, 2023, where he will receive Military Honors, at Scottsdale Thunderbird Seventh-Day Adventist Church, located at 7410 E. Sutton Drive, Scottsdale, Arizona 85260.
In loving memory of my wonderful uncle David. After I moved to Arizona in 2012, I’ve been blessed to get to know David and his family even better. They’ve welcomed me into their lives and homes, sharing holidays and meals together. Such good memories with stories and laughter. David was deservingly loved by all who knew him.
