Date of Birth: January 20, 1963
Date of Death: June 26, 2021
Donna Ellen Hicks (formerly Lee), beloved wife, mother, and educator, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2021 in the arms of her husband after an extraordinarily brave battle with metastatic cancer caused by a BRCA2 mutation. Donna will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 40 years, Mark; daughter Cyanna, and family members and a multitude of friends and former students. Donna was born in 1963 in La Puente, California, but moved to Phoenix with her family not long after her birth. She was a graduate of Greenway High School, Arizona State University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in elementary education, and Northern Arizona University, where she earned another master’s in educational leadership. She was also an accomplished writer and the author of two published books and numerous magazine articles. A National Board Certified Teacher, she worked for many years in the Washington Elementary School District, where she taught third, fourth, and fifth grades at Mountain View and Lookout Mountain Elementary Schools. She was also a Peer Evaluator at Maricopa County Education Service Agency and a Practicum Supervisor at Northern Arizona University. An exceptionally talented educator, she always gave her best to each and every one of her students and made sure to see that every student had a chance to succeed. Donna also enjoyed traveling with her husband and daughter, kayaking, hiking, and just sitting and reading a good piece of literature while snuggling with her two cats. She always will be remembered for her beautiful smile, endless energy, sweet personality, and her kind and generous spirit.
A celebration of Donna’s life will be held in the future.
