Date of Birth: November 14, 1929
Date of Death: September 16, 2018
Earl Smith passed away September 16, 2018 at the age of 88. He was surrounded and supported by his loving family and friends in his last days here on this earth. He was loved and will be greatly missed. Earl was born November 14, 1929 and adopted shortly after birth by Joseph and Gertrude Smith. He joined a sister, Ruth. Joseph Smith was a pastor, so they were raised in the parsonage in Chicago, Illinois. When Earl was 17, he began a career in the Army that took him to Germany, Panama, & Japan as well as many other locations. Earl met & quickly fell in love with Harriet at a church camp at Winona Lake, IN and married her soon after on December 8, 1951. Together they raised four children, Tim, Karen, Dan and Mark. Most of Earl's career in the military was as a medic. He retired after 20 years, and continued that career as an x-ray technician for 20 more years at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center. He was a very hard worker, often coming home after a full shift only to be called back to work multiple times for emergencies. His work ethic was a good example for his children. Harriet & Earl celebrated 51 years of marriage and saw a lot of the world together. They settled in Phoenix in 1967 and purchased a home where Earl continued to live for over 50 years. Earl enjoyed fishing, crossword puzzles, 3 mile walks & grocery shopping with coupons. In his last few years, he enjoyed opening his pantry to others and sharing those good deals he found. And regardless of how he was feeling, he always wanted to be at church for every service! The children & grandchildren will remember the cards from Dad or Gramps…always beautiful and meaningful…on time or early… and a gift of money always tucked inside! Earl will be remembered for his wonderful brownies, yummy Thanksgiving turkey and gravy, and his best ever salsa…and for his voicemail…"It's another beautiful day in Arizona & I'm out enjoying it…" For the sadness we are feeling…he would tell us "This too shall pass"! Earl was preceded in death by his dear wife, Harriet, who passed away on September 2, 2003. He is survived by his four children, Tim & his wife Pam, Karen & her husband Ken, Daniel & his wife Linda, and Mark & his wife Sharon. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Travis, Ben & Holly, Melody, David, & Paul, Ben & Laurie, and Stephen, Joshua, Darren & Teddy. He is survived by 6 great grandchildren: Aidan, Lily, Gabriel, Keira, Alex, & Mia, and one more coming soon! Earl lived a full life and as his family, we are glad to have shared it! We will miss him!
