Eleanor Elizabeth Gardner Nickerson Gilson. Eleanor passed away August 22nd, 2021 in Phoenix, AZ at the home of her daughter Catherine Nickerson Lowery. At her side was her daughter and granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Lowery. Eleanor was 98. Eleanor (Ellie) was born April 20th 1923 in Plymouth, MA. She was the daughter of Addie Estella Wall and Elmer Grandville Gardner. She spent her childhood in Plymouth, MA and graduated from Plymouth High School in 1941. She would go on to live in Brockton, E. Bridgewater, Raynham, and Holbrook, Massachusetts. She supported her family by working various jobs; most notable was working at ‘Handy Hannah’ in Whitman and ‘Foxboro’ in East Bridgewater, MA doing electrical assembly. She retired from Foxboro in 1984. Eleanor is a member of The Society of Mayflower Descendants and is a direct descendant from several passengers of the Mayflower who first settled in Plymouth, MA. Eleanor was married to Leland Eldridge Nickerson and Robert Clark Gilson who pre-deceased her. Eleanor is survived by five children; Rev. Donald Eldridge Nickerson of Kingston, MA, Judith Irene Cornellier of Troy, MI, Catherine Elizabeth Lowery of Phoenix, AZ, Cynthia Ann Beach of Sun City, AZ and Margaret Ruth Ellis of Otis Field, ME. She will live on through her eleven grandchildren and thirteen great-great grandchildren. Her favorite pass-time was golfing, gardening and singing. She was an active participant of the First Congressional Church of Whitman, MA where she sang 2nd soprano in the church choir. She loved music and could be heard happily singing and whistling while working in her vegetable and flower gardens. She was a member of the African Violet Society where her violets won many awards. She enjoyed people and greeted everyone with a big smile. It was as if she was the ‘official greeter of the world’. One could not go shopping with her without her giving a warm greeting to everyone in the store. She was strong and determined to make a good life for her children. Her love of life and nature was an inspirational gift she passed down to her children. Eleanor will be interred at Vine Hills Cemetery in Plymouth, MA in the Gardner family plot next to her mother. She will be missed and always remembered.
