Gladys Carle Hunter, 94, went to be with her Lord and Savior and loved ones who passed before her on April 6, 2020 in Phoenix, AZ. She was born in 1926 in Detroit, MI to Heinrich and Mathilde Carle. She earned her Master of Arts at Wayne State University and then taught undergraduate night classes in German there. She met her husband Donald Hunter in Detroit. They were married in 1950 and had 4 sons, Rick, Ken, Chuck, and Jack. She was a loving mother who never missed a birthday, she loved children and was a total "people person". She could spark up conversations with strangers as if they were her longtime friends. She enjoyed sculpting and created many pieces that became memorable parts of their home and garden. She was a docent at the Detroit Institute of Arts and especially enjoyed giving animated tours to children to pique their interest in the Institute's exhibits. She was a volunteer at St. John Hospital Emergency Department where she offered comfort to patients and families. Helping others brought her great joy and she received numerous service awards over the years. She enjoyed tennis and traveling with her close circle of friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Hunter, in 1988; her brother, Henry Carle, in 2017; and her sister, Dora Welch, in 2014. She is survived by her sons, Rick (Tina) Hunter, Ken (Marsha) Hunter, Chuck Hunter, and Jack (Karen) Hunter; her grandchildren Nic (Katie) Hunter, Lindsay (Vince) Hunter, Alex (Amelia) Hunter, Taylor Hunter, and Layton Hunter; her brother, Fred (Nancy) Luthardt; and her dear friends Cathy and Howard. She is also survived by her great-grandsons and many nephews and nieces. She will be interred next to Donald at the Grosse Pointe Memorial Church columbarium.
A memorial service at the Grosse Pointe Memorial Church will be scheduled at a later date.
