Harold Wayne McClelland, age 95, of Farmington passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, April 13, 2021 surrounded by family. He was lovingly cared for at his daughter’s home in Peoria, AZ. Harold was born on August 11, 1925, in Salem, IL, to Jonas E. McClelland and Goldie Deadmond McClelland. Born in Salem and raised on a farm in the Odin area, Harold learned to drive heavy equipment and large trucks, leading to his first job as a truck driver for Centralia Cartage Company making runs between Centralia and Chicago. Harold joined the U.S. Army on January 6, 1944 as an Automotive Mechanic serving with Detachments 3066th and 3067th Ordinance Service Company in Alaska operating a 40-ton wrecker to load and transport heavy equipment. He served for twenty months in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre and was honorably discharged as a Corporal in 1946. His decorations and citations include an Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon, World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and 3 Overseas Bars. After his time in the service, he returned to Salem, Illinois to marry Thelma June Fisher on September 24, 1947. Harold’s career choice as a truck driver and oil field worker took them to several locations across the country. Together they had five children, raising four having lost one, Rita Faye, soon after birth. The family settled in Farmington in February 1958. Harold favored Mack trucks and became known to others as “Mack” or “HW”. He worked for several oil field companies in the area including BF Walker Trucking, AAA Fishing Tool Company, and later retired from HOMCO International. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and could be found at the racetrack following the progress of his many beloved horses as they travelled to the local tracks in the area during racing season. Harold (and Thelma) resided at The Bridge from 2014 until 2019. Harold was known for taking care of the local wild turkeys and leading daily Domino or Blackjack games. Harold is survived by sons, Edward Wayne (Patty) McClelland and Roger Dale (Rita) McClelland; daughters, Sandra Joyce (TJ) McClelland Gilbert and Sheila Von (Steve) McClelland Rice. Harold is also survived by numerous grandchildren, Eric (Audra) Gilbert, Camden Gilbert, Zailey Gilbert, Teagan (Vikki) Gilbert, Jean-Luc Gilbert, Christopher (Nicole) Styles, Phoenix Styles, Isabel Styles, Exodus Styles, Jessica Rice, Stephanie (Timothy) Martin, Curt (Jeannie) Rice, Kelly (Eric) Brummett, Daniel Brummett, Allen (Abby) McClelland, Lincoln McClelland, Brian McClelland, Christopher Enloe, Chris Enloe, Chelsea Enloe, and sister-in-law Arleva McClelland. Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma June McClelland, his daughter, Rita Faye McClelland, his parents Jonas and Goldie McClelland, brothers Cecil E. (Blackie) McClelland, Roy N. McClelland, Loren L. McClelland, and sister Catherine Wallette.

Service Information

Harold will be cremated and a private graveside service will be held at Memory Gardens in Farmington, New Mexico at 11am on Saturday, June 12, 2021. Harold’s care is entrusted to Best Funeral Services West Valley Chapel at 9380 W. Peoria Ave., Peoria, AZ 85345.
