Howard Hamer was born on May 23, 1935 near Iowa City, Iowa to Effie Krotz and Charles Hamer. He left this world for a better place on June 22, 2022 in Peoria, Arizona at the age of 87. Howard attended schools in Iowa City, graduating from Iowa City High. He went on to attend the University of Iowa, working on a mechanical engineering degree. He also was a member of the Air Force ROTC program. He married Wanda Tweedy in 1955 at the First Baptist Church in Iowa City where he was member before moving to Arizona. Four daughters were born of that union. Howard worked in the propane gas business for many years, starting out as a delivery man for Econogas while in college and becoming vice president before moving to Arizona. He was a plant manager for Petrolane Gas in Chandler and Casa Grande before starting his own business. He and his wife also owned and operated a 7-Eleven store in Chandler. Howard liked staying busy and worked into his 70’s. He worked for Foxworth Lumber in Payson and Enterprise Car Rental in Phoenix. Even in his 80’s he used his wheelchair to get mail for his neighbors and watering their flowers. Howard was self-taught at playing the guitar and accordion. He enjoyed playing his accordion at all 4 of his daughters’ weddings, as well as church functions. Howard also enjoyed bowling, bike trips on his Honda Goldwing, camping and attending ASU football games. Howard was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers; Ralph, Clarence, Leo, Irvin, Bob, and Fred, and two sisters; Dorothy Stoneburner and Lucille Calkins, a son-in-law, Scott Ackerman and a grandson, Reynaldo Guerrero. Surviving are daughters, Julie Ackerman, Cynthia Thomas (Dave), Lisa Guerrero, and Holly Kinyon (Michael), fifteen grandchildren and spouses, 35 great grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. His greatest sense of joy and purpose was his family.

Service Information

A celebration of life will be held at Rio Vista Recreation Center in the Lakeview Room. 8866 W. Thunderbird Rd. Peoria, Az., on Saturday, October 8, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Lunch will be provided following the service.
