Hugh David Hammerslag of Sun City West, Arizona passed away peacefully on Saturday the 13th of October following a lengthy illness.
Hugh was born to Hugo B. and Helen L. (Heinrich) Hammerslag in Grand Rapids, Michigan on November 9, 1930. He attended Grand Valley Community College and earned a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Michigan in 1954. He joined Seidman & Seidman, as a CPA soon becoming their youngest partner.
As partner he moved with his family, to Rockford Illinois enjoying a productive career managing the Rockford office.
Hugh was an active supporter of higher education; he served on the Board of Trustees for Rock Valley Community College, the Governors Committee for Higher Education, the Illinois State Community College Board, The Illinois Community College Trustee Association, and served as Chair of the PSB Governing Board for Higher Education.
Hugh was also actively involved in professional and civic organizations. He was President of the National Association of Accountants (6161 Chapter), served on the Ken Rock Community Board, was President of Rotary, and was a 32nd Degree Mason.
He enjoyed vacation time with his family in the Northwoods of Wisconsin.
Upon his retirement he loved travel, Lawn Bowling, and was a passionate “Rock Hound”
Hugh is survived by his wife of 60 years Adelle’, his brother Robert (Carole) of the Philippines, children; Susan L. “Sue” (David) Christensen of South Beloit, IL; Sally H. (Mitchell) Mode of Rhinelander, WI; David H. (Kirstin Johnson) of Chandler, AZ; James R. of Madison, WI.
He is also survived by his grandchildren Ruth Christensen, Joseph Christensen, Katherine “Katie” Christensen of South Beloit, WI; Benjamin (Lindsey) Hammerslag of Champaign, IL; Emily Hammerslag of Van Nuys, CA; Sarah Hammerslag of Chandler, AZ and Sophia Hammerslag of Madison, Wisconsin.
Hugh is predeceased by his parents, his brother Charles Fredrick (Shelly)Hammerslag of Anthem, AZ, and his sister Ruth (Alexander) Grant of Ada, MI
The family would like to thank Rosalie Murch for the care and support she provided to Hugh and the family.
A private service was held at Shepherd of the Hills United Methodist Church in Sun City West.
In lieu of flowers, donations will be used to fund educational scholarships in Hugh’s name.
