James L. McCarthy, Jr. 93 passed away peacefully with his family at his side on August 31, 2011. He was born on September 24, 1917, in New Bedford, Massachusetts. He moved from Massachusetts to Arizona in 1946. He is survived by his children, Alice McCarthy of Las Vegas, Nevada, James McCarthy III of O’Fallon, Missouri, Mary Jane Kessner and Carol Ann Amaya both of Glendale, Arizona, Diane deCastro of Chandler, David Normandin of Surprise and Stephen Normandin of Glendale. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his first wife Alice which he was married to for 38 years and then to Bonnie Normandin McCarthy for whom he was married for 30 years.
Jim was an accountant and worked for many years at both Tolleson Steel and Wahler’s & Son Construction. Jim will be remembered for his wit, his music, his quick mind and for his devotion to his family and loyalty to friends. Jim enjoyed sports, writing and singing music and traveling with his late wife Bonnie. Jim was a charter member of the Arizona Songwriters Association.
Jim possessed the head of an accountant with the heart of a poet.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 6, 2011, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Best Funeral Services in Peoria, AZ. with a rosary scheduled at 7:00 pm. A mass will be celebrated at St. Raphaels Catholic Church on Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at 11:00 am. Entombment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Avondale, AZ.
