John P. Moss, age 89, a longtime resident of Ledgewood, NJ, passed away peacefully while under hospice care on September 20, 2021, in Peoria, AZ. John was the third child born to Ogden P. Moss Sr., and Myrtle A. (Felton) Moss. He was raised along with his brother Ogden Jr., and two sisters, Elizabeth and Emily in New Milford, PA. John graduated from New Milford Consolidated High School where he was class Valedictorian. He attended Penn State before enlisting and serving his country proudly in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Korean War. When the war ended, he attended and graduated from Bloomsburg State College, PA (Bloomsburg University) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. After graduation, John became a science teacher and taught general science, chemistry and physics. John went on to obtain a Master of Science degree in Education with a major in Physics from Clarkson College of Technology, NY. During his time as a teacher, John met his future wife Margaret “Bette” Barkman via an introduction by friends. After marrying in 1961 and making several moves for teaching positions, John and Bette purchased a home in Mendham, NJ where they raised their two children and resided for 30 years. When John changed careers, he joined the Airtron Division of Litton Industries located in Morris Plains, NJ. During his many years with the company, John held various positions, including Senior Process Engineer. John and Bette moved to Ledgewood, NJ in 1998. They enjoyed their retirement by visiting and spending time with friends and family. They especially cherished frequent time spent with their grandson, Connor. Fond memories were created by their many trips throughout the U.S. and to Sweden and Ireland. They enjoyed close to 55 years of marriage before Bette passed in 2016. John was a devoted and kind husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, father-in-law, and friend. He was well known for his generosity, loving spirit, intelligence, creativity, and charismatic storytelling. He was always ready to drop everything to lend someone a helping hand or just have a chat. John had the ability to fix just about anything and was a skilled builder. “You can never own too many tools” was his motto! John was predeceased by his parents Ogden P. Moss Sr., and Myrtle A. (Felton) Moss; his beloved wife Margaret “Bette” (Barkman) Moss, brother Ogden Moss, Jr., and sister Elizabeth (Moss) Steadman. He was also preceded in death by brothers-in-law; Donald Steadman, John Gallion, Sr., Milton Darrow, Sr., Andrew Santucci, and sisters-in-law; Effie (Slater) Moss and Janis (Barkman) Sullivan Santucci. John is survived by his daughter Jonna McKnight, his son Craig Moss, his son-in-law Mark McKnight, and his grandson Connor McKnight all of Peoria, AZ. Also surviving is his sister Emily (Moss) Darrow of Universal City, TX and his sister-in-law Mary (Barkman) Gallion of Cumberland, MD along with many cherished nieces and nephews.
