Date of Birth: March 08, 2000

Date of Death: February 28, 2019

Mercedes Ashton Durham went home to her Lord and Father on February 28th of 2019. Mercedes was born in Oregon City, Oregon on March 8th of 2000. The nurses asked what her name would be and her mother, Shauna, said, "Mercedes". The nurses replied, "Ah, top of the line!" When Mercedes was three she and her mother moved from Oregon to Phoenix, Arizona. Mercedes resided in Phoenix from then on, except for a couple of years when she lived in Bonners Ferry, Idaho with her grandparents, Mike and Beverly Gowan. When Mercedes was six, a brother, John Christian, was added to her family. Mercedes loved her brother and delighted in helping her mother take care of him. When Mercedes was eight she met her older sister, Lacey, who lived in Washington. She was so happy to learn she had a sister and always looked up to her. Mercedes loved her entire family very much. She enjoyed spending every other Saturday with her grandparents, Charlie and Debbie Smith, in Phoenix. She spent many summers in Bonners Ferry with her grandparents there. In Bonners Ferry, Mercedes attended Trinity Lutheran Church and was baptized there on April 28th of 2013. In school she played clarinet in band, sang in the school choir, and was on the cross country team. In Phoenix, Mercedes attended Crossroads United Methodist Church. In school she worked very hard to get good grades and would have graduated in May of 2019 with her Senior class. She enjoyed art and was showing real potential in her drawings. We all were so proud of her, and she felt proud of herself. Mercedes was truly an open, honest and caring person. She easily made friends out of complete strangers and touched many lives with her light and spirit. She always had a smile, a giggle and a greeting to share and left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She had a deep faith in God and her Lord Jesus. Her family knew she was a child of God from birth - an angel from heaven. Now she is home, but is so deeply missed here on earth. Mercedes is survived by her parents, Tony and Shauna Durham, brother Christian, sister Lacey (Justin) and two nieces, Evalie and Paisley, uncle Jeffery Smith, cousin Damon Smith, aunt Nikol Ogden, cousin Emma Ogden, grandparents, Charlie and Debbie Smith and Michael and Beverly Gowan, great grandmother Evelyn Cox, as well as great aunts, uncles and second cousins and all of Mercedes’ friends. Also favorite dogs, Bella and Baby. Mercedes was preceded in death by great grandparents Walt and Ruth Smith and Bill Cox. If desired, donations to help with funeral costs may be taken to Sunnyslope High School.
