Date of Birth: April 01, 1945
Date of Death: June 29, 2022
Sheryl Lynn (Morgan) Burkhart - April 1, 1945 to June 29, 2022 Sheryl was born to Keith and Dora Morgan in Quinter, Kansas on April 1, 1945. She always said she was “born a fool”. A fool she was not, although she did display her only-child attitude from time to time. She attended elementary and middle school in Quinter until the family moved to Colby, KS where she attended her freshman year of high school. The family then moved to Lyons, KS where she completed high school. It was there she met her future husband, Stephen Earl Burkhart (Steve) where a true love story began. After graduation, she moved to Wichita, KS where she attended Wichita Business College to become a bookkeeper. She was a friend to many, especially Shellie Tibbits, after whom she named one of her daughters. Steve and Sheryl were married on July 26, 1964 and have been together just days short of 58 years – despite the fact that Sheryl’s parents said it would not last and offered her a new car not to marry Steve (again, she was an only child). They married anyway at 19 years of age and had two daughters together, Stacy Ann Burkhart and Shelley Dyan (Burkhart) Parnell. Sheryl always said she should have taken the car and driven off with Steve instead. Sheryl’s parents came to love Steve as everyone does. Although she was preceded in death by both parents, Sheryl’s mom Dora spent her last years with them in Wichita, where they lived, worked and raised their daughters. Sheryl spent most of her adult life as a stay-at-home to Stacy and Shelley. In that time, she became close friends with their next-door neighbor, Reda Watkins. Although she’s had many friends over the years, Reda and Shellie remained her very closest and she loved them dearly. Although Sheryl and Steve’s story had its ups and downs (he did join the military without talking to her first), for better or for worse, they held strong. Sheryl served as Steve’s caretaker during his battle with esophageal cancer, Sheryl’s oldest daughter Stacy succumbed to cervical cancer around the same time and in the middle of it all, Sheryl and Steve became doting grandparents to Laine and Hadley Parnell. In 2019, Sheryl and Steve moved to Phoenix after 74 years in Kansas to be closer to their daughter and granddaughters. Steve had already become a bit of a caretaker to Sheryl, but this only increased. In the last five months (years, really), they have not spent a day apart unless completely unavoidable or if it was “Shelley’s turn” with all the COVID visitation rules. Even when looking into a Plan B for housing for Sheryl to have more consistent care, Steve said, “I just want to be with her.” Funny since Sheryl could not make a decision on anything throughout her entire life and this drove Steve nuts. But he always said, “happy wife, happy life” for 58 years and they loved each other unconditionally and immensely. Sheryl is survived by her husband Steve Burkhart, daughter Shelley (Burkhart) Parnell, son-in-law Andy Parnell and granddaughters Laine and Hadley Parnell, all of Phoenix, Arizona.
Sheryl requested no funeral services.
