It is with profound sorrow that the family of Shonny Bria announces her passing on November 24, 2021 in Goodyear, Arizona after a brief illness. Shonny was born in Vancouver, Washington on September 2, 1947. Shonny moved to Arizona in 1973 and attended Arizona State University where she received three degrees, culminating with her PhD in Education Administration. Shonny devoted her life to education and her motto was "what's best for the kids" and this drove her to pursue everything and anything in the students' best interests. She was employed by five different school districts; in Washington State she was employed by the Battle Ground School District and in Arizona she was employed by the Mesa Unified, Deer Valley Unified, Pendergast, and Grand Canyon Unified School Districts. She was in Public Education for more than 48 years with the last 27 years in the position of Superintendent. Shonny served on various boards in her career with her focus remaining on education. In addition, she was also a Harvard-trained negotiator in Interest-Based Assessment which she used in making decisions and working toward common goals. Shonny received the honor of All Arizona Superintendent of the Year in 1998 and was a finalist for Superintendent of the Year later in her career. Shonny's school board was named School Board of the Year while Shonny was in Washington State. Shonny had a sense of adventure and enjoyed going on walks and exploring. She loved the parts of nature that were not always noticed; she loved not just the mountains and their grandeur, but the small flowers that decorated the forest floor and the interesting patterns formed from twigs and leaves. She found wonder in the ordinary and took the time to notice it. Her family remembers a particular interesting midnight hike to a riverbank and through the woods that was a magical experience, all because of Shonny's guidance. Shonny showed kindness to animals and nurtured them as part of her desire to give to others. Shonny not only attended to her work but enjoyed being a competitive downhill skier and accomplished pilot! Shonny was preceded in death by her parents Dr. William R. Davis and Billie Louise Elliott. Shonny is survived by her husband of 34 years Gary Talkington, brother Bill Davis Jr., nephew William Davis III, and brother-in-law Tim (Mary). Shonny had a gift of noticing the potential in others and encouraging their pursuits in higher education. The Shonny Bria Memorial Scholarship Fund will be established to continue Shonny's work. In lieu of flowers, interested parties can contact the Grand Canyon Unified School District to contribute to this worthy cause. Shonny will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
